Paper that attract, catch and kill!

Researchers from the Micro & Nano-scale Transport Laboratory, Lassonde School of Engineering, York University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada have recently published their work on a paper based technique that “fishes, traps and kills” E.coli from water. The paper strips are laced with 0.1 M glucose solution and the bactericidal Moringa oleifera cationic protein (MOCP). The glucose solution serves as a chemoattractant  that “fishes”, the porous nature of the matrix “traps” and the MOCP “kills”. A maximum bacterial removal efficiency of 99.5% after a 90 min duration is shown. This simple device that passively eliminates bacteria can serve as a new generation of portable and economical device for water treatment.
